Training Programs

Why we train.

We train to make owning a dog rewarding and enjoyable. Training will help you learn to communicate with your dog. It also will allow you to understand your dog’s behavior. Remember training is a commitment. There will be highs and lows throughout your training. Never loss your temper! If you start to feel over whelmed take a break from training. Most importantly training builds a good canine companion and citizen.

How a dog learns. Timing, Consistency and Motivation

Timing: A dog has a period of 1.3 seconds in which to associate a cause with an effect. You must catch them in the act. Dogs live in the present. To correct a dog for breaking a sit five seconds after the fact is meaningless to the dog. You must watch closely enough that you see mistakes or successes exactly when they occur to either praise or correct.

Consistency: Training must be clear. There is no grey area. Rules are rules! You must consistently reinforce the rules.

Motivation: The praise or reward must be good enough that the dog is inspired to strive for it in the future and that the correction be unpleasant enough to extinguish a behavior that is undesirable. Praise and corrections must be motivational.

Applying the Big Three: Is my timing correct? Is my training motivational? Am I being 100% consistent? Practice every day and often!

The phases of how a dog learns. Teaching, Reinforcing and Proofing

Teaching: Show the dog with praise and reward the action you expect to accompany the command.

Reinforcing: Practice with distractions and implement the element of time. 5 minute sit or 10 minute down etc. The distraction could be a treat on the floor in front of the dog during a sit or down.

Proofing: Practice the commands and actions with major distractions at different locations.
