Boarding Your Dog Successfully Remember that in the kennel environment there will be a different pack order which restructures every time a new dog enters the kennel. Dog’s that don’t mark in their own home may now mark their toys and their bedding area. Some will destroy toys that they have had for years. Others will bark and growl. Remember, for the k-9 there is no sentimental value. Do not give them human feelings.
Send only heavy rubber toys for chewing marked with your dog’s name (first and last). These are easy for the kennel staff to keep clean while keeping your dog occupied. Blankets and bedding can at times be a choking hazard; keep them at home. Ask what treats are the best to send for safety. If your dog has a special diet, prepackage it in separate bags. Mark each zip lock bag and can: name (first and last), date, time to feed (AM or PM). Send medication in their original bottles with the proper prescription labels including veterinarian’s name and phone.
Boarding more than one dog? Do they really get along as well as you believe? A kennel run is not the size of your home. With the pack order changing, a more dominate dog may get aggressive and correct the other dog. A Me First attitude may prevail. Older dogs and puppies should never board in the same run!
Lastly send individually wrapped snacks for barding and kennel staff with a note: Please stop by and say hello. This makes for fantastic socialization and a nice way to say thank you to the staff for helping you do some training.
