Picking the Perfect Veterinarian

You should start looking for your veterinarian as soon as you decided to bring home a K-9 companion. Your veterinarian should be one of your new best friends: someone you have confidence in and respect for. Remember, this is someone who will give your dog regular examinations, provide vaccinations and work with you on preventive therapies and medications. He should have a great bedside manner so to speak.

To locate the perfect veterinarian, start out by contacting Obedience Trainers, Local Kennel Clubs, breed clubs, friends and neighbors ask who they would recommend and why. Then call and make an appointment to tour several veterinarian clinics in your area. Notice is the staff happy to see you? Are they helpful when you ask questions? Are they a group you feel you could count on in an emergency? As a dog owner you should feel confident and comfortable with the care provided. Ask any specific questions you may have about your breed choice. Some breeds have some interesting peculiarities. What about canine sports? With good consistent veterinarian care, you will prevent disease and be able to detect potential problems. The veterinarian and his staff are one of the most important people in your dog’s life. You should feel comfortable enough to stop by and say hello with your new K-9 companion. Most veterinarian clinics have dog treats and are thrilled to help you make the trip to the veterinarians’ office positive and fun. Remember, this is a big part of your dog’s socialization.
